PRICES were firm on the better quality lines as buyers from other districts bid strongly at Tuesday’s Matawhero Cattle Fair.

Over 1550 cattle were sent for sale, including annual drafts of steers and bulls from Waitangi Terrace Station at Kanakanaia and yearling steers and heifers from MD & CA Utting at Waimata.

Local buyers dominated the smaller pens, but some may have shown caution due to the current dry ground conditions. The best price for 2 year steers of $1750 went to Waitangi Terrace Station, while MD & CA Utting topped the yearling steer and heifer sections with $1565 and $1160 respectively.

Waitangi Terrace Station also received the highest price of $1500 for yearling bulls, purchased for servicing dairy heifers.

Price range: 2yr steers $3.56 to $3.70/kg; 1 yr steers $3.25 to $4.09/kg; 2 yr heifers $2.82 to $3.06/kg; 1 yr heifers $2.63 to $3.41/kg; 2 yr bulls $2.76 to $3.51/kg; 1yr bulls $2.92 to $4.54/kg.
