We have our own local veteran who served on the HMS Gambia during WW2. My dad Ken Gordon, who joined the navy as a seaman boy, and is now 95, was also on the warship HMS Gambia at the time of
the Japanese kamikaze attack. The Japanese aircraft was shot down by an American pilot thus saving many New Zealand lives. Dad was also on the HMS Gambia to witness the signing of the Japanese surrender.
It is wonderful to hear the Gisborne Naval Association is hosting such events. This will be an amazing get-together at the RSA on February 11 for these sailors and I’m sure many tales will be told.
The story about the Lyric café was also a good read. More stories like these please — they were a great insight about our local people and history.
