Orca seen off Kaiti Beach pic by Clarke Judd

Orca seen off Kaiti Beach pic by Clarke Judd

Clarke Judd was busy on a digger clearing driftwood at Kaiti Beach on Wednesday when he was lucky enough to sight a small pod of orcas.

“They were in pretty shallow water,” Mr Judd said. The four orcas (also called killer whales) were heading towards the harbour after possibly spending time chasing stingrays in the shallows.

Foraging in the muddy sea bottom for stingrays as a food source is common for this species. Orcas can be found all around New Zealand’s coastline and can grow up to nine metres in length. The male dorsal fins can reach higher than a metre.
