People from different camps were in majority agreement when it came to their views on this week's Gisborne Herald webpoll question: “Do you agree with the way authorities have handled the protest at Parliament grounds?”

Sixty-seven percent of respondents (263 people) disagreed with the way authorities have gone about dealing with the occupation (which continues), but they included both supporters of the protesters and those of the Government.

Those who replied “yes” to the question numbered 111, or 29 percent, while 17 percent (17 people) answered “do not know”.

Comments from those who disapproved of the handling of the situation, but did not support protesters either included —

“Glad police started out slowly and carefully with arrests but the blocked roads should have been cleared the first day. The protesters need to be moved now.”.

“Most appear to not be protesting but hangers on, always up for a hikoi and any excuse to not be seeking work, attending work or being a useful community member.”

“If I parked up on government grounds, I would have been trespassed. Maybe I should take more people with me.”

“Enforcement of standard, laws, law and order have been sidestepped by police. These are a fringe group and off-set of Brian's (Tamaki) Mob.”

“The police should have shut it all down immediately, this is not a peaceful protest.”

“What a shambles the police have made of this very sad attack on our democracy. These anarchists are being egged on by Bishop Brian Tamaki and his followers. His church operation should be closed down ASAP.”

“Move the protesters on. They have had enough attention and are breaking the law.”

Those who answered “no” but indicated support for the protesters made comments such as —

“If folks have made the effort to travel from far afield to the House of Representatives, then surely one of our representatives could have had the courtesy (let alone guts) to listen to some of the anti-mandate protestors.”

“Those we elected are too gutless to meet Kiwis who oppose their tyrannical policies. The behaviour of the police on Thursday was a disgrace. So I do not agree.”

“I've never seen such disgusting behaviour by government. These people are not terrorists and just want their freedoms back.”

“These protestors are champions. They are the conscience of this nation.”

“The protestors have genuine concerns over mandates and the loss of personal freedoms in New Zealand. They should be listened to. Instead we have disgusting behaviour from the PM, Trevor Mallard (Speaker of the House) and in fact all MPs. None have the courage or integrity to just go and talk to the protestors.”

“Sending in the police with heavy-handed tactics last week was appalling. It's what you would expect from a Communist country! Is that what we have become?”

“Trevor Mallard should be fired and Ardern needs to send some MPs out to listen to the people.”
