A surfer rescued a woman who got into difficulties at the northern end of Wainui Beach on New Year’s Day.

She was taken to Gisborne Hospital in serious condition.

The incident happened near the Whale’s Grave at Okitū.

The Gisborne Herald was told the middle-aged woman, a local, was pulled from the surf by a surfer who happened to be nearby.

Lifeguards from the Wainui patrol were called to assist in the club’s ATV.

“New Year’s Day surf lifeguards at Wainui were alerted to a person who had been pulled from the water at the northern end of the beach, outside of the patrolled area,” Surf Life Saving NZ (SLSNZ) said.

“Surf lifeguards provided first aid until an ambulance arrived and took over care of the person.”

St John Ambulance said the woman was transported to the hospital in a serious condition.

Also on New Year’s Day, lifeguards at Waikanae attended to a patient who had fallen over and lost consciousness.

“They provided first aid until an ambulance arrived and took over care of the female patient, who was transported to hospital,” SLSNZ said.

St John reported she was transported status three – minor.

On New Year’s Eve, surf lifeguards at Wainui attended to a patient who had dislocated his shoulder playing cricket on the beach.

“The patient was in a significant amount of pain, and surf lifeguards provided first aid until an ambulance arrived and took over care of him.”

Wainui lifeguards assisted three Rhythm and Vines attendees back to shore after they got into trouble offshore from their chalet that same day.

The city beaches, along with Tolaga Bay, were closed by lifeguards again on Monday with the red “danger” flags flying, due to debris build-up from the storm.
