One critical, one serious after Christmas morning crash in Tolaga Bay

One person is fighting for life and another is in a serious condition after a crash in Tolaga Bay on the east coast.

Emergency crews were called to Waiapu Rd at 12.55am after a car hit a tree, a police spokesperson said.

Two people were injured in the crash.

Fire and Emergency NZ assisted in helping to remove one of them from the car.

Both people were taken to Gisborne Hospital.

One was flown by helicopter in a critical condition, and one transported by ambulance in a serious condition, Hato Hone St John said.

The Serious Crash Unit was called. Inquiries are ongoing.

It comes just hours after five people were injured in a crash on State Highway 1 in Waipu, Northland at 7.15pm on Christmas Eve.

One person was in a serious condition, two were in a moderate condition and two were in a minor condition.
