One person has been arrested after leaving the scene of a crash involving a car and a truck on State Highway 2 south of Te Karaka.

The crash, close to the Waipaoa River Kaitaratahi Bridge, was reported to emergency services about 3.20pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesman said the incident involved a truck and a car, which had both been removed from the road as of 4.20pm.

Fuel had spilled on the road and crew from Fire and Emergency New Zealand were on the scene cleaning it up.

The police spokesman said one person had been arrested after decamping from the scene of the incident and police were now speaking with them.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one ambulance, one operations manager, and one rapid response unit attended the incident.

One person in a moderate condition was transported to Gisborne Hospital.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advised motorists through its website and social media to exercise caution in the area and expect delays.
