Easter holiday travellers have been reminded to build in time this long weekend to get there and back safely and enjoyably.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is expecting a lot more traffic on the roads over the Easter break.
“As the country was in lockdown last year, we expect peoplewill be making the most of the mostly mild autumn weather and heading away,” said Tresca Forrester, Waka Kotahi journey manager.
“It could be busier on our highways than usual.”
Motorists can keep track of where they are going with the NZ Covid Tracer app and check the Covid-19 website for information on alert levels and travel before they head off, at covid19.govt.nz/
“This year's Easter Hotspots map shows you exactly when traffic is likely to get congested near key holiday destinations,” Ms Forrester said.
“If you can travel outside the most congested times, it helps spread the load and reduce stress for everyone.”
Police have issued their pre-Easter messages too for motorists to watch their speeds on the highways, to take plenty of rest stops, drive to the conditions, and be sure not to drink and drive.
