Opinion

On Wednesday, June 13 the United Nations General Assembly rejected a proposal to condemn Hamas’s violent rioting that led to the death and injury of many Hamas members and other Palestinians. Instead the assembly accepted a Palestinian initiative to condemn Israel for defending itself from thousands of Gazans trying to overrun its borders, firing rockets into Israeli towns and damaging farmland and nature reserves with hundreds of incendiary devices.

So, congratulations to Hamas for achieving its objectives in securing the UN sympathy vote. Thanks also for help from the majority of worldwide media for unevenly handling the reporting of this violent clash initiated by Hamas.

What is so disappointing is that our Labour Government has followed National’s lead by once again voting against Israel.

Don’t they realise this is tantamount to opposing Israel’s right to defend herself?

By signing this resolution, New Zealand is empowering Hamas’s terrorism against Israel.

Monetary support from the UN intended for Palestinian needs has habitually been diverted for ammunition, missiles and the building of tunnels.

Signing this resolution will not provide Palestinian families with aid or security.

It is time that our politicians did some homework and revised New Zealand’s historical stance with Israel.

Surely there are some MPs who understand that Hamas cares more about annihilating Israel than peace for its own people. Please speak up, the outcome is actually critical for New Zealand.
