Work starts next week on the construction of a new slow vehicle bay on State Highway 2 — work which will involve the excavation of 39,000m3 of steep hillside.

The site is 2km south of Raupunga, on the southbound ascent after the Mohaka Bridge, after traffic passes under the Mohaka rail viaduct. Work will commence from August 15, with trees being felled before contractors begin excavating.

Between 7am and 7pm, temporary speed reductions and stop/go traffic management will be in place, and delays of up to five minutes are expected. After 7pm, the shoulder will remain closed and a reduced speed limit of 50-70kmh will be in place.
