Gisborne police have been investigating multiple reports over the past week of vehicles being stolen from residential addresses, along with the theft of valuables from unlocked vehicles.
Acting Sergeant Rangi Kingi from Community Policing said in some cases offenders had broken into homes, taken keys and stolen cars.
“In otherinstances, vehicles have been stolen after they have been left unlocked or with keys inside.
“Our inquiries are ongoing,” he said.
“If you see any suspicious behaviour, contact police on 105, if it is after the fact, or 111 if it is happening now.
“We work hard to hold offenders to account and we reiterate that people should take preventative measures to help keep their vehicles safe.
“Ensure the vehicle is locked and parked off the road, out of sight, or in secure car parking where possible, consider a vehicle alarm or vehicle immobiliser, or purchase a steering wheel lock.
“In addition, please ensure valuables are removed from vehicles, particularly if cars are parked in the open.”
