The Te Puka Tavern Beach and Boat fishing competition in Tokomaru Bay at the end of December attracted more than 170 fishers on the beach and out in boats.

There were 28 boats registered, with 72 anglers on board, while 101 tried their luck on shore for the annual event on December 27 and 28.

The beach fishing competition drew more than a hundred contestants. The associated sandcastle competition was won by Kahanui and Kairangi Chaffey with their fish sculpture. Photo / Supplied

“What an awesome couple of days of fishing we had,” said Mawhai Chaffey, Te Puka Hunting & Fishing Club Incorporated cultural adviser.

“The ocean played its part and stayed beautifully flat across both days.”

The club has thanked every angler who took part over the two days.

“A special mention to our furthest-travelled crew, the Lady Gail and her captain, Keith Bone,” Chaffey said.

“Keith never fails to make the trip from the mighty Hawke’s Bay every year –thank you for your continued support.

“To our sponsors, thank you very much. As we all know, events like this simply wouldn’t be possible without your generosity.
