About 300 people made the most of the Ilminster Intermediate swimming pool when it opened to the public last Friday. For over a decade Ka Pai Kaiti has run the pool programme and this year it’s as popular as ever, says Tuta Ngarimu.

Four paid life guards are on duty every day at the pool, and special activities run every Wednesday. This Wednesday there will be a cycle challenge with Cycle Gisborne providing the bikes.

“It’ll be a mini-triathlon with a swim, run around the cycle track and then a few circuits by bike,” said Mr Ngarimu.

The following Wednesday a water volleyball competition is planned, with teams of six. ZORB soccer is the next activity in the programme and this involves kids getting into a ZORB (there’s one for children aged 6-10 and one for the older kids) and playing football.

On Wednesday January 23 there will be a chess competition with a difference where competitors have to do a lap of the pool while their opponent makes a move.

“It’s part of the Activator Programme sponsored by Gisborne District Council and is all about getting the kids active.”

Mr Ngarimu said Ka Pai Kaiti was very grateful to Peter Ferris (Ilminster principal) for supporting the programme every year.

On the final Wednesday of January, there will be a hip hop competition.

“We’re mixing it up a bit and will get the kids to do hip hop in the pool.”
