China does not appear to have heard of the United Nations-led climate drama that has taken centre stage in Europe and North America recently.Coal contributes more than 70 percent of China’s electricity. Last week its government approved two more coal mine projects costing $1.32 billion.Nearing completion this month is the 1837km-long Menghua railway, connecting the coal mining areas in northern China with the industrial hub in Jiangxi Province, which will transport 200 million tonnes of coal annually.Construction began on a Chinese-sponsored coal power plant in Turkey last month — at $1.7 billion it is China’s biggest ever direct investment in Turkey.Strange how the UN turns a blind eye to China. Perhaps Greta Thunberg should pay the Chinese a visit.Patrick Cooper
