Roberts Tree Surgeons workers had an early start yesterday morning to remove three large logs, one measuring 8m, from under the buttresses of the Gladstone Road bridge to prevent further damage to the structure. They started at 5.30am.
Managing director Paul Roberts said, “If they don’t get removed now andwe have a big storm you get more material caught up in these logs then it creates a dam.”
The company used a specialised winch to lift the logs out of the river. “It also makes the river safer for people doing waka ama,” Mr Roberts said. Divers joined in the effort.
Later in the day, they were to remove a 7m log jammed under the William Pettie Bridge.
