A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

Firefighters were called to a house in Anzac Street on Monday afternoon after a pot of food on the stove overheated and caused moderate fire damage to the kitchen.

The call came in at around 1pm when the female resident discovered it.

“There was also minor smoke damage to the laundry areas and front entrance hallway,” a senior firefighter said.

“The woman got out of the house OK, without injury, though she was checked out for smoke inhalation by St John.”

The fire crew got inside and dealt with the fire with a low pressure delivery.

“We also checked out the ceiling void for fire spread using thermal imaging gear, but there was no further spread.

“It’s that familiar story  — ‘Always keep looking while you are cooking’.”
