The ninth annual Tauawhi No Violence Longboard Classic was held in early December at Northern Makorori, with 37 entrants competing across junior to over-60 grades.

The event is the brainchild of Ian “Moti” Procter, who with his friends from the Moananui Longriders, saw the opportunity for a charity event similar to those they travel overseas to.

“It’s more about the kaupapa than the competition,” Tauawhi Men’s Centre co-ordinator Tim Marshall said.

“We see it was a family-friendly, fun day out, promoting the message of safe and healthy whānau.”

Having said that, the open men’s division often attracts quality surfers from outside Tairāwhiti, as well as local former champions, like event director Daniel Procter.

As well as the competition, there is always the Speedo and bikini event, which also includes posing, on the beach and in the water.

This year’s event was dedicated to the late Don Pearson, a longtime supporter of the kaupapa and Tauawhi Men’s Centre.

“It was great to have Don’s wife Jenne with us on the day as we remembered his contribution and connection to us all.

“Fittingly, the major spot prize of a new longboard was won by Steph Barnett, who had designed the T-shirts with a picture of Don on the back. Next year will be the 10th anniversary, so Tauawhi and the Moananui whānau are looking forward to making it another special day.”
