Police have an inquiry under way into a fire that gutted a stationwagon parked on the side of the road outside a house in Chalmers Road early last Thursday night.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent an appliance to the incident at 8pm that night.

“The vehicle was fully alight when we got there, right outside the owner’s house,” a senior firefighter said.

“We ascertained the cause was suspicious and called in the police.”

The fire started inside the rear of the stationwagon and the vehicle was  burnt out, the senior firefighter said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity around the stationwagon at the time the fire started.

Call the 105 number or ring Crimestoppers of 0800-555-111.
