Gisborne District Council has updated the rural access reinstatement situation across the region with work continuing on road works, bridge remediation, silt removal, woody debris treatment, and drainage improvements.

More than 40 crews continue to be involved in the local roads work.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency also has an extensive work programme on the state highways.

“Resources are under pressure, weather slows things down and we are competing with regions who are also trying to rebuild fragile networks, but we’re getting there,” a council spokesperson said.

“We thank you for your continued patience and understanding.”

In the Hikurangi section of the region in Wharekahika Road resilience work continues to protect the road from river scour, but it is now open to all vehicles.

Depending on the weather, this work will likely continue for another two to three weeks.

In Mangaoporo Road heavy rain has slowed progress and the water tabling and pavement widening continues this week, with metalling scheduled next week.

Lottin Point Road is open, but resilience work will continue for two to three weeks.

Pōtikirua Road is open to light vehicles only.

Work has started in Waione Road and Herupara Road on water tabling, scour repairs, and pavement widening in areas where the pavement has been lost, followed by culvert clearing and metalling.

That work will take around two weeks to complete.

In Waikura Road water tabling, culvert clearing and culvert replacement has started, and will take about three weeks to complete.

In Uawa, despite heavy rain, 2500 tonnes of aggregate was placed on Mata Road last week and is nearly at the 12km mark on Mata Road (lower section).

Work continued through the weekend to get dig-out repairs done at Ihungia Road.

Metalling work will be conducted under stop/go traffic management, this week on Mata Road and Ihungia Road.

In Horehore Road (Uawa) work should conclude on Horehore Road by the end of this week, weather dependent.

Culvert replacement and pavement repairs continue this week on Whareponga Road (Uawa).

Road widening work continues in Waipiro Bay Road this week.

“We must conduct some work under a road closure around the 3km mark on Waipiro Road, starting today and going till Friday, 8.30am to 4pm daily.

In Waikawa Road work will commence directly after repairs conclude at Waipiro Road.

“This work will focus on water management and culvert replacement in areas that require it. It is a challenging site.”

In the Waipaoa district 4276 tonnes of road metal aggregate was laid last week and 2276 tonnes placed across Davis, Paparatu and Waimaha roads.

Whakarau Road was prepared for metalling, and carting aggregate to stockpiles, with metal placement scheduled to start yesterday.

Metalling will also commence at Hokoroa Road and Te Weraroa Road this week.

The last reseal site of the extended 2022/2023 season at Taurau Valley Road was finished last week.

In Bellerby Road flood remediation should be completed this week.

Work started on pavement improvements and drainage activities at Goodwin Road last week, slightly earlier than anticipated and continues this week.

In Gordon Road flood remediation is now complete.

In Ruakaka Road water tabling, road widening to improve one-way access, and culvert installation was scheduled to start yesterday.

Weather has delayed work on the road retreat on Te Kowhai Road

Wharekopae Road work continues at the large dropout near the 44km mark and will continue for three more weeks.

Water tabling will continue along Pehiri, Whakarau, Wharekopae, Hokoroa, Tiniroto, and Waingake roads.

Woody debris clearance work is well under way in removing woody debris around bridges and 56 percent of that work is complete.

Temporary bracing and safety frames have been scheduled for installation  at Makarika Bridge late this week.

In Bruce Road at temporary crossing material preparation work has commenced for the low-level crossing.

The alignment of the bridge and approach roads will be finalised next week, with a view to starting earthworks during the week beginning June 12.

Challenging conditions have prevented bridge installation at Awapapa/GlenInnes Crossing. The bridge spans are on site and ready for installation, but contractors need a week of fine weather to get the site sorted.

Work on Oliver Bridge in Oliver Road has been delayed until the week commencing June 19.

At the Whakoau Bridge on upper Mata Road work to protect the piles has commenced underneath the bridge, along with a 5m concrete block wall upstream on the Ihungia side of the bridge for resilience.

At the Oweka Bridge in Waikura Road the bridge team is working on a design to protect the bridge and the pavement around it.

“We are very aware that many people still rely on river crossings and winter conditions and early rain are causing delays regarding the temporary crossing installations.

“Getting solutions here is our priority, but we must work around the conditions.”
