Hunt for person who shot at police car

Police have appealed for information from the public as they continue an inquiry into an incident last Thursday in which shots were fired at a police vehicle parked outside the Te Araroa police station.

It happened at about 10.30pm.

Police and the armed offenders squad responded to the incident.

“The sole charge officer, who was in the property at the time, was not harmed,” said acting area commander Inspector Matt Broderick.

“We take threats against our staff, like this, incredibly seriously and support measures are in place to ensure the officer and his family’s wellbeing and safety.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe at home and at work, including our staff.”

Additional police staff have been deployed to the area to assist with the investigation.

Inspector Broderick said police were committed to holding those responsible to account.

“We would welcome any information from the public.

“If anyone saw or heard any unusual activity on or around Rata Street in Te Araroa about 10.30pm last Thursday night, please call Detective Sergeant Wayne Beattie on 06 831 0700.”
