Having heard and read much in the news lately about the incredible stress our health system and health workers are under, I would like to give a shout out to the staff of our local hospital. I have had cause to have many dealings with the local health system over the past few months and I have found every person I have dealt with to be unfailingly kind, compassionate, caring and efficient.

I include here doctors, nurses, receptionists, secretaries . . . each one has been able to convey the impression that individuals really do matter. Some of them, I believe, go way above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to accommodate the needs of people who live a great distance away from the hospital, ensuring appointments are coordinated as much as possible and arranged for as convenient a time as can be managed.

If they are struggling with great stress they certainly don't take it out on us, the patients.

But I would say to other patients: smile and be kind to your health worker. A little gratitude goes a long way.

A very grateful patient
