Homestay rest for cyclists on the Rere trail welcomed

Cycling between Gisborne, Matawai and Opotiki has got a little easier, with a new place to rest up.

Motu Trails Charitable Trust has announced Te Wera Homestead as an official partner.

Trust chairwoman Kathy Sheldrake said the homestay provided another great place to re-energise on the Rere Falls Trail midway between Eastwoodhill Arboretum and Matawai.

“This is awesome news for the cycle trails. Rere Falls Trail is growing in popularity. Quite a few people now are also riding from coast to coast, Gisborne to Opotiki, and some even further.

“They are connecting Motu Trails and Rere Falls Trail. The more options on places to stay, the better, so they can ride the distance they want in a day.”

The homestay, run by Lou and Mark O’Neill, has three rooms and can cater for up to 10 people, with facilities to suit those on a cycle journey.

Rere Falls Trail is a Heartland Ride on The New Zealand Cycle Trail.

It follows mostly quiet rural roads between Gisborne and Matawai, with 27 kilometres of gravel road highlighted by Rere Falls and the Rere Rockslide.

Motu Trails Official Partner accommodation also includes Motu Community House and Eastwoodhill Arboretum.

“Te Wera Station also makes a good base for day rides, with options such as the 50km loop of Te Wera and Rakauroa roads and State Highway 2.”
