Fun in the sun is also what Gisborne YMCA’s Breakaway holiday programme is about. Places are still available for the free programme that runs until January 27.
Eleven-to-17-year-olds are invited to join YMCA’s Breakaway crew for adventure, epic activities, BBQ lunch and complimentary pick up/drop off.
Activities run daily from 10am-3pm and include surf lessons, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, hydrosliding, rock sides and a visit to the Doneraile Park waterfall.
The HB Williams Memorial Library offers stimulating, fun projects for 11-17 year olds for the next two Tuesdays.
Bristlebots and circuit building are programmed for Tuesday, January 17. Separated from their stems, toothbrush heads provide a multi-legged platform. Mounted with a vibrating cellphone motor and battery, the wired up bristlebot skitters about on its bristled legs. Bristlebot-makers can add eyes, cotton-bud oars or pipe-cleaner stick figures — the variations are endless.
On Tuesday January 24, book, badge and ‘zine making will be available. Children will learn to make books with blank pages they can write in, and ‘zines they can fill with art, poetry, stories and pictures.
They will also have the opportunity to make badges on the library’s badge-making machine.
The library is also running free activities under its summer reading programme.
This Friday, cool stories and cardboard construction will begin at 10.30am while “monster-ous” stories and mega monster making is planned for Monday, January 16.
On Wednesday morning, children can look forward to nature stories and crafts. At 2pm on Thursday, January 19, the Little Barking Theatre Co presents The Little Kowhai Tree, a story about growing up.
The programme is rounded off at 10.30am, Monday, January 23, with a celebration of Kiwi-ness through kitschy crafting.
