A warning already in place for the region north of Tolaga Bay remained at the orange level, but it was also extended from 14 hours to 38 hours from 10pm this evening until midday on Sunday.
MetService also revised its assessment of the chance of an upgrade to a red warning from “low” to “moderate”.
“Expect 150 to 200mm of rain, with possibly 250mm in localised areas if downpours occur. Intensities of 20 to 25mm per hour are possible tonight and during Saturday, but may reach 25 to 40mm per hour in downpours, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms. Intensities are likely to be lower during Sunday morning.
“Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions possible.
“Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand has sent two Urban Search and Rescue teams to the East Coast today.
Assistant national commander Ken Cooper said this was in preparation for the severe weather forecast for Tairāwhiti and the Coromandel from this evening and through the weekend.
“Our deploying specialist teams are there to support our volunteer brigades and strengthen local capacity, helping communities stay safe and supported during this weather event.
“One team is pre-positioned in Hicks Bay and the other at Te Araroa. Both teams are equipped with drones and rescue equipment.
“The wet weather is likely to increase the risk of landslides in already saturated conditions, and we’re asking the public to stay alert and take care.
“Don’t travel unnecessarily and keep an eye on weather updates.“
