Today marks Gisborne resident Lucy Berry’s 104th birthday.

Born in 1919 in Rotorua, she went school at Wairoa, before working for Sir Andrew and Lady Russell in the central North Island as a housemaid. She was first married in 1940 aged 20.

She worked as a florist during her first marriage then went to finishing school in Hastings after her husband passed away in 1965.

She married former sailor Ron Berry from Gisborne in 1981 and moved here where he had a joinery business. She was widowed a second time in 1997.

She celebrated her latest milestone sharing cake with friends at the Forces Cafe at the Gisborne RSA.
