Five incidents of seals being hurt or killed by dogs on Wainui Beach have occurred over the past week.

In the wake of this “huge increase” in attacks, Gisborne District Council is reminding dog owners not to allow their pets anywhere near seals.

“Please ensure your dogs are kept well away . . . this is the time of year seal pups come ashore and they need to be given space,”  Gisborne District Council animal control team leader Ross Hannam said.

“This is a huge increase. We would not normally see this many incidents reported in three months let alone in one week.

“We ask everyone to be mindful and carry a leash with you at all times in case you see a seal pup along the shore.

“Please also pick up your dog droppings and don’t just cover them in sand . Our beaches are for everyone to enjoy.”
