The camping season in Tairāwhiti has got off to a flying start ahead of summer with Gisborne District Council issuing 254 camping permits since Labour Weekend.

Pouawa has been the most popular spot so far.

Campers must apply for a permit online on the district council website. More information on the permit requirements is also available on the website.

Council inspectors monitor camping sites throughout the season.

“The issues that we have been experiencing so far are consistent with previous years, but are being managed,” council liveable spaces manager Tyler Kirk said.

“Things like litter being left behind ... by some campers, trees being damaged, some minor behavioural issues and issues like staking out campsites.

“We remind campers to take all rubbish and recycling with them when they leave, as there are no rubbish collection services at any of the sites,” Kirk said.

“To ensure fair use of space, please avoid marking out areas with tarpaulins or other items. Infringement notices will be issued if needed.”
