Gisborne’s Enterprise Swim Team and Comet Swimming Club came away from the Hawke’s Bay/ Poverty Bay swimming championships at Kiwa Pools with a stack of medals.
Enterprise had their biggest team in some time at the regional champs.
“We had 48 swimmers, with many at their first meet ofthis calibre, and they did an outstanding job,” head coach Matt Martin said.
“First-timers Peyton Dear, Zoe Gardner, Chloe Mcphail, Chloe Menzies, Emma Menzies, Irelyn Purnell, Beauden Spriggs, Benji Thorpe and Maise Thorpe all swam fantastically well, and we look forward to the progress of our entire team in coming years.
“With great numbers in our training squads helping, these athletes challenge themselves against each other weekly.
The boys’ open relay won silver, AJ Kinsella won the 400m and 800m freestyle finals in his age group and Celia Willougby took gold in her age group of the 100 butterfly.
“They were the standouts of a very good meet for Comet,” head coach Glenn Hamblyn said.
“The relay team of Max Phillips/Mako Fukushima-Hall/Te Maumahara Hape and Calvin Braybrook came in second to the Sundevils of Hawke’s Bay by point-48 seconds, which was a great result for them.”
Comet's boys' relay team gave a good account of themselves, finishing second to the Sundevils of Hawke's Bay. Max Phillips (Comet cap) springs off the blocks with Mako Fukushima-Hall in the water below having completed his leg.
The Comet medal tally was three gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze.
