The summer camping season in the district has been “positive”, although numbers are down, according to Gisborne District Council.

So far this season, 1392 camping permits had been issued by the council, less than the same time last season.

A total of 2064 permits were issued in the 2024-25 camping season.

“But overall it’s been a positive camping season to date,” council liveable spaces manager Tyler Kirk said.

“There have been fewer campers than we expected, likely due to the weather. Most have respected the rules and done the right thing with their rubbish.

“Regular weekly checks show our camping areas have been well looked after and enjoyed.”

Summer camping runs to April 30.

The council has reiterated that permits are required before setting up camp. Campers must apply for a permit online before arriving at the site.
