Gisborne school students joined a nationwide climate strike yesterday.

Their protest at the Roebuck Road roundabout was one of 20 climate strikes across New Zealand. “This strike aims to raise awareness about the urgent need for climate action and to demand meaningful policy changes to combat the climate crisis,” a media statement from organisers Schools Strike 4 Climate said. “As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, it is imperative that governments and industries take immediate and decisive action to mitigate its impact. This strike serves as a powerful demonstration of the public’s demand for climate justice and sustainability.

“Organised by a coalition of environmental groups, youth activists, indigenous rōpu and concerned citizens, the climate strike brings together people of all ages and backgrounds who are passionate about ensuring the planet we pass on to future generations is liveable.”
