Gisborne Speedway Club has had to cancel its club night meeting scheduled for Friday because of low competitor numbers and staff unavailability.

The club’s Christmas meeting at the MTF Awapuni Speedway was to feature stockcars, youth ministocks, saloons, production saloons, TQs, stockcars, streetstocks, sidecars and classic stockcars, along with a visit from Santa.

“The decision to cancel has been a disappointment,” club president Sam Hughes said. “But we do not want to run a meeting that is below standard for good racing.”

The next meeting will be Saturday, January 10 when the club will host the Production Saloon Car Champ of Champs and the TQ Champ of Champs.

Hughes said it was too early to predict entry numbers for it.

“They are just starting to come in now.”

The club will follow that meeting with its annual streetcar race and demolition derby on January 31.

“We wish all our fans and members a safe and happy holiday season,” Hughes said.

“Good luck to all of our competitors with their racing over our break. We know of a number of drivers who will be racing at meetings in other parts of the country over the festive season.

“We will do our best to keep our fans updated with results.”

Major outside meetings in January include the New Zealand stockcar championships in Christchurch, and the New Zealand superstock championships in Wellington.

The “G” cars of Gisborne will be involved in both meetings, especially the superstocks.
