Flooding came into the SPCA and animals had to be shifted to safety. Video / Gisborne SPCA

A family visiting the Gisborne SPCA when the centre flooded during heavy rain over the weekend have been hailed as “true heroes” by centre manager Kayla Newman.

The flooding began while the family were at the centre’s adoption room looking to adopt a new pet.

“A family happened to be visiting when the flooding started and, without hesitation, they jumped in to help us. They were soaking wet by the end of it, but still positive and wanting to adopt. They were true heroes in that moment and really showed the kindness of our community,” Newman said.

The animals were moved to safety and the SPCA posted footage of the flooding on Facebook, asking for help as they cleaned up. Donations of towels and other items came from the community.

“The response has been overwhelming. We have had so many messages of support, offers to help, donations and people checking in on the animals and our team. It’s been really heartwarming, and all the animals are safe and well, with our teams able to move them to higher areas of the centre,” Newman said.

She said Fire and Emergency also came to help during the flooding.

“We are incredibly grateful to have the Gisborne fire service step in to help. Their calm, practical support made a huge difference at a really stressful time; we cannot thank them enough.”

The animals are now safe, but support for the SPCA and the animals is always welcome, Newman said.

“The best way people can help now is by continuing to support us however they are able to. Whether that’s adopting, donating, fostering or simply just sharing our message. Every bit of support helps us keep care for animals, especially after an event like this.”

Anyone looking to adopt a new furry friend or help out can find the Gisborne SPCA at 14 Nursery Rd, Matawhero or phone 06 867 9463.
