The New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Racing Championship returns to Gisborne on February 14 for Round 4 of the series.
The Thunder In The Bay round marks the 12th year Gisborne’s Lankshear family have run the event.
“It continues to be a highlight of the offshore powerboat season for all involved,”race organiser Molly Lankshear said.

“As usual we will give locals and visitors the chance to view the race boats, then enjoy a day by the water and support a local event.”
Boats will be on display at the inner harbour boat ramp from 9am on race day.
“The NZ Offshore Powerboat Racing Association encourages people to get along early to see the boats up close and meet some of the competitors before racing begins,” Lankshear said.
Race times are scheduled for noon and 1pm.
“Once again, Midway Beach is expected to be one of the best spots for spectators wanting to watch the action as boats compete out on the bay.”

Lankshear said Thunder In The Bay offered a friendly environment for those wanting to be involved.
“We encourage locals to give it a go. It gives everyday boaties the chance to experience racing without needing years of experience. All they need is a boat, a crash helmet and a life jacket.”
Total Fleet Solutions Automotive & Marine is the main sponsor of the 2026 Thunder In The Bay.
“We are thankful for the ongoing community support and are looking forward to another successful day on the water,” Lankshear said.
Entry numbers for the races are yet to be confirmed.
The 2025-26 series started at Gulf Harbour in October, followed by rounds in Taupō in November and Napier in January.
