The cruise ship season in Tairāwhiti ended on a disappointing note on Wednesday.

The visit by the Seven Seas Navigator was cancelled due to sea conditions in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay.

It was the final scheduled visit of the season by cruise ships to Tairāwhiti.

“The Seven Seas Navigator arrived at the pilot station near Young Nicks Head at around 7am yesterday morning,” a ship agent said.

“The captain made the decision not to go to anchor for the day, and to pass Gisborne by.”

The ship continued on its way to Tauranga.

It had 487 passengers on board.

“It was a disappointing end to the cruise season in Gisborne,” the agent said.

“But sea conditions were just too rough, with that southerly, for the tendering of passengers.”

It was the seventh scheduled cruise ship visit this season.

The first visit of the season in December was cancelled due to the weather, but the others were completed successfully.

In the 2026-27 season, the port’s shipping schedule currently shows 12 visits.

The Coral Adventurer kicks the season off on December 6.

The Asamara Pursuit comes back next season, along with the Seven Seas Explorer and the Seabourn Quest.

Other ships making their maiden (first) visits to Gisborne next season will be the Silver Moon, calling three times, and the Riviera, calling four times.

The Riviera carries up to 1250 passengers, weighs in at 66,000 gross tonnes, is almost 240m (785 feet) long, and has 15 decks.

The Silver Moon is the sister ship of the Silver Muse and the Silver Nova and carries about 590 passengers.

A police spokeswoman said police responded to the incident at the corner of Lytton and Gladstone Rd about 2.40pm.

“Five people aged between 18 and 44 were arrested for unlawful assembly, and two of those were also allegedly in possession [of] an offensive weapon,” she said.

Police were considering charges as of Tuesday afternoon.

State of Emergency dates

The Local State of Emergency in Tairāwhiti has been extended for a further seven days from today until 5pm on Wednesday February 11.

Tairāwhiti Civil Defence, in a statement on social media, said the decision to extend was made to ensure it could keep supporting communities as the response continued and the recovery work began.

“This extension gives response teams the powers they need to keep people safe, carry out assessments and respond quickly if conditions change,” the post read.

“We know this has been a challenging time and we want to reassure you that this decision is about keeping support in place – not because of any new or immediate threat."

The single largest grant in the region for this round was $35,000 to the Gisborne Boardriders Club for a contractor.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand Gisborne East Coast Centre Trust received $6000 for event costs.
