Gisborne’s Victoria Domain was packed for the opening two rounds of netball grading on Saturday.

Double wins to Girls’ High Senior A, draws for YMP and Waikohu, and losses for Whangara’s teams were the main features of the first day.

The courts featured games for senior, secondary, intermediate and Year 5 and 6 grade teams.

The teams played a shortened game format for grading.

“It was fantastic to see our netball whānau back at Victoria Domain enjoying the new courts,” netball commentator Sherrill Beale said.

“The atmosphere was buzzing.”

In the premier grade, Gisborne Girls’ High School Senior A defeated Old Girls Whangara 18-4, and beat Whangara Old Girls in a tight contest 9-8.

Claydens Waikohu 1 had a 19-9 win against Old Girls Whangara, then drew with Turanga FM YMP 14-14.

YMP also drew 15-15 with Horouta Gold. The Gold team beat Whangara Old Girls 12-10.

“All the premier teams have retained many of their last season’s players, and their links showed at times,” Beale said.

“A few players have moved clubs, so it will be interesting to see them strengthen their new teams,

“It was interesting to see last year’s runner-up YMP finish the day with two draws.

“This may be signalling another close competition is on the cards.”
