A 27-year-old woman has been arrested and charged after a homicide in Gisborne.

Police were called at 4.20am on October 28, after reports of a man with severe injuries.

Wayne Dewes was rushed to hospital where he died a short time later.

According to tributes online, Dewes died on the night of his 67th birthday.

A homicide investigation was launched and a 27-year-old has now been charged with murder.

Detective Inspector David de Lange, of Eastern District, said they were pleased to have made an arrest.

“It brings some sense of reassurance to the whānau and the wider community,” he said.

Police would like to thank members of the public who came forward with information.

The woman is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court today.
