A man has died after suffering a suspected medical event while driving in Gisborne, causing his car to leave the road and crash into the driveway entrance of a home.

The incident occurred on Roebuck Rd near the intersection with Palmerston Rd 8.40am.

“The vehicle came to rest against the property’s fence,” a senior firefighter said.

The attending fire crew assisted St John staff.

“It’s highly likely the man in the car suffered a medical event,” Hato Hone St John area operations manager Shane Clapperton said.

“Attempts were made to revive him, but sadly, those efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“There were passersby there carrying out really good CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation] when we arrived, and we would like to thank them for their efforts,” he said.

Police cordoned off the street while emergency services tended to the man and cleared the scene.
