Walk, run, bike, swim or skip.

Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society is inviting the public to take part in Marathon in a Month through any form of preferred activity.

A marathon completed in a month with daily walks or runs over November would only require 1.4km each day, “but it’s not too late to have a crack,” a Cancer Society spokeswoman said.

She advises participants “to enjoy the fresh air, be sun smart and remember that small moments of daily movement are what makes a difference”.

Gisborne-East Coast Cancer Society is encouraging walkers, runners, cyclists, swimmers or skippers to take part in its Marathon in a Month fundraiser event. The pictured recommended route for participants is described as “a simple track that gets you out and about along our gorgeous riverways".

Funds raised will ensure the 77 New Zealanders a day who are diagnosed with cancer “will not go through it alone”.

The Cancer Society has also organised a charity basketball fundraiser to be played at the YMCA over the next two Saturdays.

Matches will be played from 8.30am to 12.30pm this Saturday with teams progressing through to the finals the following Saturday.

The public are invited to watch the games.

Meanwhile, the Cancer Society is delighted to announce that the Christmas House fundraiser, scheduled for this Saturday, has sold out.

The Christmas House at 26 Fitzherbert St is “an open home-style afternoon of divine Christmas-themed rooms and a marquee full of shopping bits to enjoy all while carols fill the air,” said Cancer Society fundraising and events co-ordinator Shay Podjursky.

The house will be open from midday to 8pm.
