The Gisborne Choral Society is having its final concert of the year on Saturday at St Andrew's Church.

The Gisborne Choral Society is having its final concert of the year on Saturday at St Andrew's Church.

A spring offering of short choral items is on the menu at St Andrew’s Church on Saturday, with the Gisborne Choral Society’s last concert for the year.

The twilight fundraiser will feature items from across the centuries, from the 16th to the present day.

One piece, To Stars We Reach, has been written by one of the choir’s newest members, Emily Madill.

“We’ve had a few months since our last concert in June, enjoying getting to know some new pieces, and familiarising ourselves with old choir favourites,” said choral society president Mary-Jane Richmond.

“We had thought we would spend the time honing our music skills with drills and breathing exercises and not bother with a concert. But as the weeks went by, we decided we would like to have a small recital or concert to present some of the pieces we had worked on.”

The choral society was also keen to enjoy St Andrew’s Church and its wonderful acoustics as a performance venue, while it could, she said.

The Presbyterian Church has given notice that the church will close on June 30 next year.

Saturday’s concert will be conducted by choral society musical director Gavin Maclean and accompanied on the piano by Coralie Hunter.
