“We’re working to further increase the services we provide, and are in talks with NZTE (New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) and Callaghan Innovation, among others, as to what this might look like.”
Gisborne Chamber of Commerce marketing manager Suzanne Winterflood said there had been a noticeable rise in people acting on start-up ideas.
“We’ve noticed a real surge in interest from local entrepreneurs with smart new business ideas. Some have been looking for networking and business contacts, while others have been asking about the Chamber’s Business Mentors Programme.
“There has also been enormous interest in the nine-week Co.Starters programme for start-ups.
“Our region has always fostered emerging talent and embraced big ideas. I think the difference now is that a number of organisations are offering training, start-up advice and practical support to new businesses and, crucially, entrepreneurs are making the most of those opportunities. It’s exciting to be part of it.”
The statistics define business units as those involved in predominantly one kind of economic activity from a single physical location or base.
