NEW business statistics show more than 50 business enterprises started up in Gisborne this year, creating employment for about 100 more people in the district.

Statistics New Zealand’s business demography statistics show that there are now 4995 business units operating in Gisborne, compared to 4938 last year.

The employee count for those businesses also rose from 20,330 in 2014 to 20,510 — and both Gisborne Chamber of Commerce and the region’s economic development agency say the rise in businesses here bodes well for the region’s future.

Activate Tairawhiti chief executive Steve Breen said the agency had been supporting start-ups and existing businesses through the range of services available at the Tairawhiti Business Hub.

Positive developments expected for next year“This is a great result and sets the region up for further growth and some very positive developments in 2016," Mr Breen said.

“We’re working to further increase the services we provide, and are in talks with NZTE (New Zealand Trade and Enterprise) and Callaghan Innovation, among others, as to what this might look like.”

Gisborne Chamber of Commerce marketing manager Suzanne Winterflood said there had been a noticeable rise in people acting on start-up ideas.

“We’ve noticed a real surge in interest from local entrepreneurs with smart new business ideas. Some have been looking for networking and business contacts, while others have been asking about the Chamber’s Business Mentors Programme.

“There has also been enormous interest in the nine-week Co.Starters programme for start-ups.

“Our region has always fostered emerging talent and embraced big ideas. I think the difference now is that a number of organisations are offering training, start-up advice and practical support to new businesses and, crucially, entrepreneurs are making the most of those opportunities. It’s exciting to be part of it.”

The statistics define business units as those involved in predominantly one kind of economic activity from a single physical location or base.
