Drawing inspiration from Rosemary Parcell’s horse paintings on show at Tairawhiti Museum, the fully-booked school holiday art programme saw children aged between 4 and 12 put their own spin on the powerful equine.
Artist Teressa Matthews, who taught the workshop, said they first observed the oil paintings then did preliminary
sketches in the gallery.
“We talked about proportions and composition before the painting began.”
There were many different takes on the horse, with some adding wings and unicorn horns, and others focused only on the face.
Other art activities this week include creating Korean tiger puppets and exploring the forces of motion and gravity by making a catapult and an artwork by using a swinging pendulum as inspired by Leonardo da Vinci.
