The troublesome and huge Goldsmith slip site in the Waioweka Gorge has further material still on the move and remained closed overnight as of Monday.

Overnight closures remain in place today (Monday) for two of the region’s state highways.

The closures are at Punaruku on SH35 between Te Araroa and Wharekahika/Hicks Bay, and the huge Goldsmith slip on SH2 in the Waioweka Gorge.

NZ Transport Agency reported on its Journey Planner site on Monday that the closures were due to further instability issues at both sites.

“SH2 Waioweka Gorge is open under stop/go control past the Goldsmith slip site from 6am to 8pm each day, with delays of up to one hour,” NZTA said.

“The road is closed overnight,” was the update on Monday. “Travel early or later in the day if you can to avoid long waits.

“The road is safe under controlled access, but it is still an active worksite and could close at short notice if the weather changes.

“Normal road conditions should not be expected.”

The gorge road was open 24/7 under stop/go for much of Easter, and was to have remained open until Tuesday with no overnight closures for five nights.

SH35 Wharekahika/Hicks Bay to Te Araroa is also open under stop/go traffic management.

“Road users are advised to expect delays along this route. Please note the road will close overnight between the hours of 6pm and 7.30am daily,” NZTA said.

Both sets of restrictions applied “until further notice”.
