Tahitian navigator and priest Tupaia travelled with Captain James Cook on the HMS Endeavour to New Zealand.
One of the landing sites for the ship was Turanganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay in 1769, and a flotilla will also be arriving in Gisborne (in October) to help mark 250 years of the first onshore contact between Maori and Europeans.
The flotilla will include an outrigger canoe, or va’a, which is coming from Tahiti.
