A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

It may be one of your New Year resolutions.

It may be something that you have been wanting to do for a long time.

Maybe you want to improve your pronunciation or you just want to get to grips with some basic words.

Whatever your reason, there are free beginner options available in Gisborne to help learn the basics of te reo Maori.

Among the options are free night classes at Te Wananga o Aotearoa’s Whirikoka campus on Childers Road and the Eastern Institute of Technology’s Whatukura School of Maori Studies on Palmerston Road.

Classes start soon. Most are two to three hours, one night a week over a term or a year, with the occasional weekend wananga.

Te Wananga o Aotearoa and EIT are calling for enrolments. Those interested are encouraged to get in quick as many of the classes fill up fast.

Te Wananga o Aotearoa is holding info sessions to allow people to meet tutors and find out more about its te reo basics classes — Te Ara Reo Maori level 2.

Facebook posts for the info session say Te Ara Reo Maori has become “a national institution”, attended by newsreaders, public figures, teachers, school principals and business people.

“If you want to learn some basic Maori language this is the perfect place to start,” the post reads.

“Whether you want to use te reo Maori at home with the kids or in the workplace, this interactive programme will have you speaking with confidence in no time.

Te Ara Reo Maori tutors are Haley Maxwell, Stella Beach and Sammy-Jo Unasa-Su.

There are two info sessions on Thursday, January 17 — from 10am to 11am and 6pm to 7pm.

EIT has classes for level 2 to 4 in the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo Maori.

They are designed to provide akonga (students) with the language skills required to communicate, with little support, in familiar everyday contexts, and in Maori environments where they feel comfortable.

Subject areas include Maori and marae activities and may include noho marae (stayover) and work-based activities.
