Firefighters were on the ground in the big fire zone at Port Awanui near Tikitiki yesterday dealing with remaining hot spots from the blaze that scorched around 10 hectares of beachfront and hill vegetation this week.

A team of five were on the ground doing the hard slog yesterday, digging down into several deep-seated fire remains to extinguish them fully. FENZ has not yet declared the fire completely out.

The Herald understands there may be firefighters on the ground there again today.
