A woman has moderate burns after a kitchen fire at a Stanley Rd house.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called about 4pm on Monday.

“A pot of oil on the stove overheated and caught fire, and the woman suffered some burns moving the pot,” a senior firefighter said.

“She was taken to hospital by St John Ambulance.”

An ambulance spokesman described the burns as “moderate”.

The senior firefighter said smoke alarms alerted the woman to the pot fire.

“From that point of view, it was a good save.

“The occupants had put the fire out by the time we arrived, and there was only minor fire damage.”

The senior firefighter said the incident again illustrated the care needed when cooking.

“It also pays to know how to put a fire out.”

Fire and Emergency NZ advises a frypan lid, pot or large flat object like a chopping board be placed over the pan to starve the fire of oxygen.

Never throw water onto a burning frypan or pot and never carry it outside.
