The excitement of a romantic adventure and sex in a triad is at the heart of New Plymouth vocal loop artist EJ Barrett's music video recorded at the War Memorial Theatre on Saturday.

The song, Paint Me A Picture, is about representation for the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning) community, said Barrett.

“I'm a queer. My main goal is for representation for the queer community and the polyamorous community. These communities are under-represented in the media.

“Paint Me a Picture is about a triad, a thrupple, I was part of. The song was written about the romance.

“I was approached by two women and this is the song formed out of that. It's about the excitement of new adventure and sex.”

As a vocal loop artist, Barrett records layers upon layers of vocals to create her songs.

“My sound has a jazz-blues-soul flavour. It's sitting-in-a-comfy-lounge music with a glass of wine.”

She cites as influences the R&B, blue-eyed soul and reggae sound of English artist Joss Stone, British musician/producer and loop artist MC Xander, whose music references dancehall, reggae, dubstep, drum and bass and hip hop, and American multi-instrumentalist sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith's folk music group Rising Appalachia.

Barrett also incorporated her circus sideshow skills into the music video performance. A sideshow is a circus's secondary production that can include acts such as sword-swallowing, contortion and, in Barrett's case, fire play.

“My music clip will be mostly visually of me doing fire tricks. I eat fire. I was doing circus work for the past few years in Taranaki but I wanted to interact with my audience on a deeper level.

“I couldn't access that through circus and sideshow. I needed a microphone.”

Paint Me A Picture is one of four original tracks that will feature on Barrett's upcoming EP.
