FIRE destroyed a residential shed in Kaiti yesterday, and a fence and car parked nearby were damaged.

Fire and Emergency NZ responded with two fire trucks and operational support at about 12.20pm in De Lautour Road near the corner of Owen Road.

“When the crew arrived the fire was going in the shed end-to-end,” senior station officer Bernie Bull told The Gisborne Herald.

Vegetation also caught alight. It took the officers about 15 minutes to get the fire under control and they spent most of the afternoon dampening the area.

The shed, which had some stored furniture and other flammable material inside, was destroyed, and a fence and car suffered minor damage.

“It was lucky it was in the day so it was spotted by many people, and we were able to get help there quickly,” SSO Bull said.

Nobody was inside the shed or in the near vicinity.

The cause of the fire was uncertain and was being investigated, SSO Bull said.

Firefighters also responded to a chimney fire in Elgin at around 8pm last night.
