Fifty-nine nominated for sport awards

Sport Gisborne-Tairawhiti received 59 nominations for the 2018 Bronwyn Kay Agency Sporting Excellence Awards and the independent judging panel will get together to consider them this month.

The finalists in each category will be announceed on October 1.

As in previous years, the judges will select a top three in each category to go forward to the awards night on November 9.

“There is again a very wide cross- section of codes and athletes nominated this year,” said community events adviser Debbie Hutchings.

“The number of nominees is up slightly on the number for the 2017 awards.”

The nominees represent sporting achievement across the period from July 1 last year to June 30 this year.

“A large proportion of the nominations have come in our junior sportsman and sportswoman categories, and it’s fantastic to have also seen an increase in nominations for our community impact awards.”

Those awards recognise people whose sporting intiative has made a large impact across the community.

“We are very happy with the quality and the number of nominees this year.”

The awards function will be held at the Farmers Air Showgrounds and tickets go on sale on October 1.
