A Tiniroto man alleged to have seriously assaulted a fellow farmer has been granted bail.

David Bruce Morrison, 43, appeared in Gisborne District Court via AV-link from Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison, where he was remanded after previously being declined bail by a JP.

Counsel Doug Rishworth told Judge Philip Recordon there were now sufficiently changed circumstances to warrant a renewed bail application.

The judge accepted Mr Rishworth’s submissions and granted bail with conditions including that Morrison live at his father’s house and not go within 30kms of Tiniroto.

Morrison has elected a judge-alone trial on charges arising out of the incident — wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and threatening to kill or do grievous bodily harm.

The case will be called next at a Crown case review hearing on February 7.

Morrison pleaded guilty to an associated charge of possessing a firearm. That charge will follow alongside the defended matters.

The judge noted police strongly opposed bail.
